Welding
With an emphasis in layout and design in accordance to the American Welding Society, CCC welding students are not afraid to get their hands dirty!
Welding is an important part of our nation's growth and stability. A large part of
the U.S. economy is dependent on welding, and continued advances in the field help
to drive this nation's productivity and strengthen its financial stability. Whether
you enjoy working with your hands, traveling the world, inspecting and analyzing things,
working with numbers, working underwater, communicating, or inspiring others, there
is a career opportunity available in the welding industry for you!
The Welding program at CCC follows the American Welding Society's "Schools Excelling through National Skills Standards Education" (SENSE) program. This allows us the ability to train our students at two different levels: Entry level and Advanced Welder. This industry developed curriculum ensures students receive well-rounded training in all areas of welding. Welding topics include:
- Welding Safety and Health
- SMAW, GMAW, GTAW welding
- Weld inspection and testing
- Oxy-Fuel Gas cutting principles and practices
- Plasma Arc cutting principles and practices
- Welding metallurgy
- Pipe welding, layout, and fabrication
- Structural welding fabrication

The Welding program is a full-time occupational technology program that allows students to complete program requirements in just 3 semesters. Classes are Monday - Thursday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Students can start in either the fall or spring semester.
Upon completion of the full-time program students can earn certificates of completion from CCC in Entry-Level Welder and Advanced Welder, as well as AWS certificates in Entry-Level Welder and Advanced Welder. These courses all feed into the Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding. Students can complete the associate degree requirements in 2 additional semesters.
Individuals interested in applying for admission to the full-time Welding program must:
- Complete an Application of Admission and submit it to the Admissions and Records Office.
- Complete an Occupational Technology Program Application and submit it to the Faculty Phase IV Secretary in Room 403 or email it to OTApplications@clovis.edu
- Complete the Accuplacer or other appropriate placement test and meet the minimum score requirements. Please see an Academic Advisor for more information.
Upon completion of all admissions requirements, students will be placed on a waiting list based on the date in which all admissions requirements are completed. Students will be notified by letter once they have been accepted into the welding program and must register by the deadline provided in order to secure a spot in the program. Students who receive a letter but do not register prior to the deadline will be moved to the bottom of the waiting list. Open enrollment will begin the Monday preceding the first week of classes. During open enrollment, any student who has met all requirements may register for the full-time program on a first-come, first-served basis provided there is still availability in the program. Students accepted into any Occupational Technology program must register prior to the first day of class.
The American Welding Society (AWS) estimates a need for 375,000 welders by the year 2023. Ninety percent of all domestic products require welding in some phase of production, making skilled welders in constant demand.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers was $44,190 in May 2020. Employment of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers is projected to grow 3 percent from 2019 to 2029, about as fast as the average for all occupations. The nation’s aging infrastructure will require the expertise of welders, cutters, solderers, and brazers to help rebuild bridges, highways, and buildings.
